Please welcome back Jonathan Yungkans of Los Angeles. You could call him Synkroniciti’s Resident Poet, as he follows our themes with conviction and we have featured his poetry in every issue since our second, “Water.” Our “Flow” issue contains three of his best: “For Whom the Daily Forgetting, to Whom the Diurnal Plunge,” “Duplex: The Old Man Looks Strangely at the Sea” and “We May Never Perceive the Thing We Have Become.” These poems all contemplate the relationship between human consciousness and the ocean, with their tides, their natural ambivalence and deep undercurrents. We enjoy surfing across those waves, but much lies beneath the surface that we cannot know, drawing us ever closer to understanding and to peril. The extreme beauty of Jonathan’s forms and language reflecting on the nature of self and humanity is exquisite.

Jonathan Yungkans is a Los Angeles-based writer and photographer who earned an MFA from California State University, Long Beach while working as an in-home health-care provider, an occupation he still practices. His second poetry chapbook, Beneath a Glazed Shimmer, won the 2019 Clockwise Chapbook Prize and was published in 2021 by Tebot Bach.
